ARTS PEOPLE, LET'S TALK!

Welcome to the BPS ARTS teachers blog. Let us know what you're doing. There is so much action going on in our classrooms and so little time to share ideas! Hopefully our blog will help us communicate more often, share resources, discover new tools, and learn about what's happening with the Arts around the world. Come on, don't be shy! Let us know what's going on in your school. Tell us about the new things happening with your art program. Share new ideas with other arts teachers. Share your success and your challenges with us. We are all here to help!

  1. I wanted to post this comment to let other arts teachers know a little more about my work. I'm Laura, the visual arts teacher at the Hennigan elementary. I also work as the TST for my school so I'm very much into technology and how to merge technology and art. Much of my PD I've dedicated to take tech related courses, specially those offered by MassArt and the ICA. I love to use this new media in my classroom and hope that I can help any of you who are feeling shy about using technology, or just need some ideas. I have a few cool programs going on in my classroom right now. One of my favorites is the computer animation project I'm working on with 5th graders. Students are now learning how to use Flash. They are working on creating original characters and editing their first movie. Come on, let us know what you are doing! Everything counts! How do you like your new laptops?

  2. Laura:
Good for you for organizing this. Although I retired from BPS Dec. 31, 2007 (I'd taught art since 1971), I'd love to keep in touch with people and even offer comments and support. I taught at the Conley, Beethoven, and Manning when I retired although I was at the Conley and Beethoven together for 18 years before budget cuts had me add another school as an alternative to working fewer days. I, too, used technology and was TST at the Conley for 5 years, so you are not alone. I was a very involved art teacher and had my kids always participate in YAM, Wheelock, BPLF, and Northeastern art exhibits, posted art online (I think it's still there at the Fine arts website) , and used photography a great deal. I was the historian, you might say, for the Beethoven and Conley, printed out photo books on events using iPhoto (Mac) and sent many photos to be posted on myBPS.
It WAS tiring teaching in several schools but I even had student teachers from Boston University Grad School.
So, if anyone has questions or needs support when the going gets tough, I'd love to help. It would be a great way to keep in touch.
By the way retirement is great. I'm actually doing my own art (watercolors) for the first time in 15 years!

  3. Hi Ellen,
Congratulations on your recent retirement! Thank you so much for your message and your willingness to support fellow arts teachers. It sounds like you were an extremely busy art teacher like me! I am working with student teachers from MassArt and SMFA, not to mention all the exhibits, wikispaces, blogs, etc. I am very glad to hear from you and know that thanks to our blog we have been able to communicate. Feel free to visit our wikispace and look around. We have a few web albums you can access and discussion areas where arts teachers will begin meeting soon. Stay in touch! Best of luck with your paintings. Feel free to post some samples of your work on our wiki. You could do that in our wiki's Let's Share page. http://bpsarts.wikispaces.com

It is up for the rest of the month...I invite any teachers who would like to bring kids to come to the exhibition, the seniors would love to host you. Let me know your good times--contact me at kmarsh@bostonartsacademy.org.
